SPRINGBOARD 2

Background

The European sports-technology (Sports Tech) sector is expanding rapidly—but women, especially athletes, remain underrepresented in innovation and leadership. Springboard 2 builds on the success of Springboard 1 – Athletes New Careers, which explored how athletes can transition into tech-oriented entrepreneurship. Insights from that project revealed that women face distinct barriers: gender bias, limited access to funding and mentoring, and few visible role models.

Objectives

Springboard 2 empowers women athletes aged 24–35 to become entrepreneurs and leaders in Sports Tech through:

  • Training & Skill Development: tailored modules on entrepreneurship, leadership, and technology.

  • Mentorship: a Europe-wide mentoring network using the SheSkillz Global digital platform.

  • Networking & Community: European events and online spaces connecting athletes, experts, and investors.

  • Policy & Advocacy: guidelines and recommendations for inclusive practices in sport and tech organisations.

Partnership
Led by Igloo Innovation (Norway), the consortium unites six partners:
Collective Innovation (NO), Global Sports Innovation Center (ES), Orange Sports Forum (NL), Güler Legacy Sports Accelerator (TR), and JohnsenSkillz / SheSkillz Global (SE/CH).
Together, they combine expertise in entrepreneurship, gender equality, sport innovation, and digital mentoring.

Activities

  • Research on barriers faced by women athletes in Sports Tech.

  • Development of five interactive training modules and case studies on female Sports Tech leaders.

  • Workshops and bootcamps across Europe on business creation, pitching, fundraising, and leadership.

  • A digital mentorship and networking platform linking 100 women athletes with 50 mentors.

  • Dissemination events, publications, and open-access toolkits to scale the results.

Project Results

Expected Results

  • 100 women athletes empowered with entrepreneurial and leadership skills.

  • 50 new mentor–mentee partnerships established across Europe.

  • At least 20 sport and tech organisations adopting inclusive policies.

  • A sustainable European network advancing gender equality and innovation in Sports Tech.

Long-Term Impact
Springboard 2 contributes to EU priorities on gender equality, inclusion, innovation, and dual careers in sport. By bridging the gap between sport and technology, the project strengthens Europe’s leadership in a fast-growing sector and ensures that women athletes play a central role in shaping its future.
