SafeTennis envisions a future where every young athlete can grow in a safe and empowering tennis environment.
Background
SafeTennis is a European Erasmus+ initiative that aims to make tennis a safer, more inclusive, and child-friendly sport. The project was launched in response to recent cases of abuse, harassment, and misconduct within tennis and other youth sports across Europe.
Despite growing awareness, many young players still train and compete in environments without clear protection standards. SafeTennis brings together national tennis federations, universities, and innovation-driven organisations to create a lasting culture of safety, trust, and respect in tennis.
The partnership unites:
Lithuanian Tennis Union (Coordinator)
Romanian Tennis Federation
Turkish Tennis Federation
Hungarian Tennis Federation
The Hague University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands)
Collective Innovation AS (Norway)
with the support of Tennis Europe and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) as associated partners.
Objectives
SafeTennis takes a multi-level approach to child safeguarding and athlete welfare, building systems that protect, educate, and empower everyone in the tennis community.
Main objectives:
🧩 Develop a unified European Safeguarding Framework
Create a standard safeguarding policy and toolkit that can be adopted by tennis federations and clubs across Europe.🎓 Deliver tennis-specific safeguarding education
Design and deliver practical, evidence-based training for coaches, referees, and club administrators — both online and face-to-face.💬 Build a confidential digital reporting system
Establish an accessible, secure online platform for reporting safeguarding concerns safely and anonymously.🤝 Create a European network of Safeguarding Champions
Train national safeguarding officers and ambassadors who will promote and monitor safe-sport practices in their communities.📊 Introduce continuous monitoring and evaluation
Implement regular data collection and policy reviews to ensure safeguarding remains effective and up-to-date.
Project Results
🌍 Expected Results and Impact
Short-term:
200+ coaches, referees, and administrators trained in safeguarding.
Dedicated Safeguarding Officers appointed in each federation.
